Hiroshi SUGANUMA

Curator / Professor of Musashino Art University

Hiroshi Suganuma is an independent curator born in 1963. He is also a professor in the Department of Imaging Arts and Sciences at Musashino Art University. He joined Recruit Holdings Co., Ltd. in 1987. In 1990, he played a key role in founding "Guardian Garden", a gallery dedicated to supporting young artists. He then curated the open-call exhibitions "Hitotsubo Exhibition" from 1992 to 2008, and "1_WALL" from 2009 to 2023, both of which sought new expressions from younger generations and introduced numerous young artists to the public.

 

He began working as an independent curator in 2017. In 2018, he curated the exhibition "Film Grains as Words – The Origins of Japanese Contemporary Photography" at the GoEun Museum of Photography in Busan, South Korea. In 2021, he curated "Things that Stay and See" at the Yokohama Civic Art Gallery Azamino. In 2024, he participated in curating the "Shen Chao-Liang Photography Exhibition: Return and Backflow" at the Higashikawa Bunka Gallery in Hokkaido.

 

Additionally, he has curated exhibitions and served as a portfolio reviewer at events such as the Pingyao International Photography Festival, Daegu Photo Biennale, Young Art Taipei, and the Belfast Photo Festival. In Japan, he curated the "Higashikawa Award Winners’ Photo Exhibition" at the Higashikawa Bunka Gallery in Hokkaido from 2011 to 2023, the longest-running photography festival in Japan. He is currently part of the organizing committee for the annual T3 Photo Festival Tokyo, held since 2017.
