★Philong SOVAN(Cambodia)
Photography in Cambodia
In 2008, as a young amateur photographer, Philong was assigned to document the first edition of Photo Phnom Penh, organized by the French Cultural Center. This experience revealed to him that photography could transcend mere "beautiful pictures" or "postcards." Later, as a photojournalist for The Phnom Penh Post, Philong began developing personal projects, which led to exhibitions. His most significant work, In the City by Night—a decade-long project—has been widely exhibited and published as a book and limited-edition portfolio.
Alongside his practice, Philong began teaching photography at the French Institute, nurturing a new generation of Cambodian photographers. In 2008, there were only a few local photographers (notably Mak Remissa); today, thanks to the festival and education initiatives, Cambodia boasts a vibrant community that has evolved from documentary to conceptual work. Last year, we launched Studio Images House of Photography—the country’s first dedicated photography school—where Philong now serves as Director, further solidifying Cambodia’s place in Asia’s photographic landscape.

In Real Life, In Artificial Light: Photography and AI’s Influence on Creativity
As artificial intelligence reshapes creative practices, artists are both embracing its possibilities and questioning its impact. This lecture explores how photographers and digital artists use AI as a tool and a subject, expanding the boundaries of image-making. Drawing from In Real Life, a 2020 exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Photography (MoCP), the talk examines how machine learning, algorithmic interventions, and synthetic media challenge ideas of authorship, originality, and truth. Through a critical and creative lens, it asks: What does it mean to create in an era of machine-generated imagery?
