Born in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan in 1954. Graduated from Department of Photography, Nihon University in 1977. Graduated from doctoral course of graduate school of Department of Art, Tsukuba University in 1984. Editor-in-chief of a quarterly photo magazine “déjà-vu” from 1990 to 1994.Books include; Araki!(Hakusui-sha,1994), Welcome to the Photo Museum(Kodan-sha, 1996), On I-Photography(Chikuma-shobo,2000), Digigraphy(Tyuokoron-shinsha,2004), Japanese Photographers(Hakusui-sha,2005), A Book of Araki Boooks!(Bijutushuppan-sha,2006), Thinking into Photography(Kawade-shobo-shinsha,2009),The Age of “Girly Photo”(NTT Publishing, 2010),The Archive of Contemporary Japanese Photography(Seikyu-sha, 2015),Key Words of Japanese Contemporary Photography(Film Art-sha,2017)
