In 1974, he studied photography under Daido Moriyama at Tokyo Visual Arts and aspired to become a photographer. He later became an assistant to Masahisa Fukase for 18 years.
In 1987, he founded and directed the photography gallery Place M.

1988, the Photographic Society of Japan Newcomer Award
1993, the Higashikawa Awards – The New Photographer Award
1996, the 21st Kimura Ihei Award
1999, the 12th Shincho Gakugei Award.
2007, the Photographic Society of Japan Annual Award
2010, he served as a jury member for the Kimura Ihei Award.
2020, he held a solo exhibition “Map of Memory” at the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum.
2021, he was appointed Deputy Director of Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts
2021, the Higashikawa Awards – Domestic Photographer Award
